Ken Bourque

Grew up in Enfield, played football, basketball, and baseball at Enrico Fermi High School (FHS), graduating in 1973.  The FHS quarterback threw 3 touchdown passes in the school’s first home victory, 32-12 over Windham Tech, in 1971.  Outstanding left-handed pitcher and cleanup hitter who hurled 3 shutouts in two weeks (May, 1973).  He allowed a total of nine hits, while striking out 48, including a career high of 19 against Woodrow Wilson High.  Pitched a 2-hit shutout, struck out 16 batters, and drove in both runs in a 2-0 state tournament win over Manchester.  Was a key member of the 1973 American Legion baseball state runner-up team, and struck out 8 batters in championship loss.  Named 1973 Journal Inquirer Athlete of the Year.  Selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20^th round of the 1973 draft (ahead of Jeff Reardon, who briefly became baseball’s all-time saves leader in 1992).  He chose not to sign with the Phillies, but instead accepted a full scholarship to American International College.  Pitched 4 years at AIC, and helped the team reverse a losing trend in his first 3 seasons, to a 18-14 mark in 1977.  Still holds the AIC record for career strikeouts (251), and tied for first in single season strikeouts (72 in 1974).  He pitched 3 years for Falmouth in the Cape Cod Baseball League, and played 5 years in the Tri-County League of Western Massachusetts

Bob Francoeur

Outstanding three-sport athlete at Enrico Fermi High School, graduating in 1975.  Unanimous selection as the Journal Inquirer’s 1975 High School Athlete of the Year.  A speedy halfback who scored 66 points as a junior, then tied for the state scoring lead with 150 points in 1974.  Scored 22 touchdowns and piled up 1,364 total yards as a senior, while accounting for more than half of Fermi’s 291 points.  Served as tri-captain, and was the only Enfield player named to the 1974 All-CCIL first team.  Also, a baseball All-CCIL selection as a center fielder, where he led the northern CT area in batting average (.435) and hits (37) in 1975.  Played 3 years of Enfield American Legion baseball. At age 15 in 1973, was the shortstop and leadoff hitter of the Legion team that won the Zone 8 title, and finished state runner-up.  Played 2 seasons of varsity basketball at FHS.  Accepted a full athletic scholarship at Central Connecticut State College.  Played 4 years of varsity football, ran for 104 years, including a career-high 57-yard scamper in a 51-0 win over Cortland State.  Played center field for Central baseball for 3 seasons, and graduated in 1980.

Courtney McLaughlin

Played youth sports for Hazardville Little League, Enfield Lancers, Enfield Stars, and many recreation basketballs teams.  Captain of JFK Junior High School football, basketball, and track teams.  In 1976, was 2^nd in the state and set school record in the 440-yard dash, which still stands after 34 years.  At EHS, played football and was named 1^st team Journal Inquirer All-Area and All-CCIL, basketball (All-CCIL, JI All-area 2^nd team, MVP and captain). Played EHS baseball for 2 years (catcher), and track for one year (all-CCIL, MVP and Captain).  Set school records in 220-yard dash, mile relay, and 4×110 relay.  Played Enfield American Legion baseball as a catcher.  Recruited to play basketball and football in college, he accepted a full football scholarship at Boston University.  At BU, he played on the 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1983 Yankee Conference championship teams.  He was named captain in 1983, and was the 2^nd leading rusher on the team.  His BU football teams were nationally ranked in the top 5 Division 1-AA teams.  The 1983 team upset national champion, Eastern Kentucky.  He was BU’s first football player in their history to earn a varsity letter while attending graduate school.  Was the 1983 Charles Bower Award winner (for the greatest effort, cooperation, and sportsmanship), and participated in a pre-camp tryout for the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL.

Shelly (Turgeon) Folsom

Played 3 years of varsity basketball at Enfield High School (1972-1975), and was captain in her senior year.  During the 1973 season, her EHS team won the Penny High School girls’ basketball invitational tournament, and was named to the All-Tournament team.  For the 1974 – 1975 season, was named team MVP, and selected for the Class LL Connecticut All-State basketball team.  During her junior and senior years, her teams qualified for the state tournament.  Played EHS field hockey, and was co-captain as a senior.  Attended Central Connecticut State College (CCSC) from 1975-1979, and played basketball.  Was team co-captain in her junior year, and captain her senior year.  Her team’s qualified for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) regional tourney for three of her four seasons at CCSC.  In 1979, she was presented the Rebecca McCord Award for Outstanding Academic and Athletic Achievement. She had recorded the highest overall grade point average of any graduating Physical Education major, receiving the Medal of Merit Award for Academic Achievement.

George Daly, Jr. Award Winner – Tom Owens

Graduated from Enfield High School in 1966, and began his involvement with Enfield youth sports in 1981.  He coached at all levels of the Thompsonville Little League, including eight All-State teams, and was President for 10 years.  Founded and sponsored the Enfield Babe Ruth team in 1987, playing in the Western Mass. Babe Ruth/Connie Mack League. His team won the Massachusetts state championship in 1989.  He created a bowling league at a local bowling center, and remains actively involved with the Enfield Recreation Department as Director of Basketball Operations.
