Jason Byrnes
Graduated from Enrico Fermi High School in 1994, where he earned varsity letters in football (3 years),
basketball (4 years) and baseball (1 year). Captain of the football and basketball
teams as a senior. Currently in the all-time Connecticut High School Football
record book with 2,946 career receiving yards (tied-5th, but held record until
2002); 172 career receptions (tied-8th); 81 receptions in a single season (1993,
tied-12th); and 28 career receiving touchdowns (tied -15th). All-State player in
1992 and 1993 with over 1,000 receiving yards each season, including 1,193 in 1993.
Averaged 17.1 yards per reception; Had 14 catches in one game (10/29/93 vs. East Hartford). Scored 199 career points. Played football for two seasons at the
University of Connecticut.

Ashley Kaufman

2004 Enfield High School (EHS) graduate. 2-time All-CCC soccer goalkeeper, and All-Conference & All-State softball catcher. Played women’s ice hockey with Northern Lights & CT Clippers teams. 3-sport athlete at Utica College in Soccer, Ice Hockey & Softball. Two-time Empire 8 Women’s Soccer All-Conference First team selection.
Three-time Empire 8 All-conference soccer goalkeeper, posting a school record 18 shutouts with a 1.01 career goals against average. 2006 NYSWCAA All-State team. Recorded a school-record 18 shutouts, & 31-23-3 overall record. Owns school-record with 296 saves & 1.01 career goals against average.
Led the Pioneers to two straight Empire 8 Conference Tournament appearances (2006 & 2007), including an ECAC conference championship game appearance in 2006. Empire 8 Women’s Soccer All-Conference honorable mention as a sophomore. Utica women’s ice hockey (2004-2008) defenseman, scoring 35 points in 91 games. Led women’s hockey team to 67 victories, including three-straight 18-win seasons in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. She helped guide the Pioneers to 4-consecutive ECAC Women’s West Conference Tournament appearances, including an appearance in the program’s only ECAC Women’s West Conference Championship game in 2005-06. Utica softball (single
season) batted .394 with 43 hits and 25 RBI in 32 games. Received Utica’s ‘Dick
Miller Award’ winner as the most outstanding female student-athlete after her senior year. Named an Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention. Elected to the Utica College Hall of Fame in 2014. Since 2014-15, she has been an assistant soccer coach at St. Lawrence University, Washington & Lee University, and Yale University.
Served as head coach for Connecticut Football Club in Wallingford, CT and youth town soccer programs. Holds a NSCAA Level 1&2 goalkeeping diploma, and is currently working on her US Federation licenses.

Jim Olson

1981 Fermi High School graduate. In 1978, ‘79, ‘80 was 3-time AAU Freestyle
wrestling champion. In 1979, ‘80, ‘81, named 3x CCIL All-conference league. 1977 & 78 – Placed First at USWF CT Championship freestyle. Won back-to-back Class LL wrestling championships at 132 lbs. in both 1980 & 1981. 1979, wrestled freestyle with 23-10 record, 1980 freestyle record 57-2, and 1980 record 78-5 (freestyle & high school style). Placed 3rd in 1981 State Open. Co-Captain of Fermi’s 1980 Class LL state championship team as a junior, and finished 5th in CT open). In 1981, ranked 1st in Class LL, State Champion, and was team Captain, with a record of 56-8 total. 1979, placed 3rd in freestyle in CT High School state tourney. 1980, finished 1st in freestyle CT High School states. 1979, 1980 USA CT national team member (free style & Greco roman). 1980, placed 3rd in Northeast regionals. 1981, won 1st place as NE Takedown champ. Wrestled three years at Western New England
College. 1985 Assistant Coach for Fermi High wrestling & track. Head wrestling coach at East Windsor High School (EWHS) from 1988-2006. Also coached EWHS track, soccer, cross country running from 1988-2006. Coached over 40 state finalists and over 100 all conference athletes – over 75 state place winners. Inducted into the East Windsor Athletic Club Hall of Fame in 2007. Founded Rodney Smith Classic wrestling tournament at East Windsor High School, which has been ongoing for 20+ years. Member of the 1980 Fermi High State Championship wrestling team (inducted into Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006).

Patrick Phelan

Grew up in Enfield, and began his high school soccer career at Fermi High School.
Transferred to Loomis Chaffee, and then to Wilbraham & Monson Academy (WMA), where he was Gatorade National High School Soccer Player of the Year in 2003. Graduated WMA in 2004. Represented the US Men’s National Team at the U-18, U-20, and U-23 levels, helping the team qualify for the 2005 Under-20 World Cup in Holland and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Played 4 years at Wake Forest University, earning a spot on the 2004 ACC All-Freshmen Team, and the 2005 Top Drawer Soccer All-American 2nd team. He was a 2007 NSCAA 1st Team All American and First Team All-ACC, captaining Wake Forest to the 2007 NCAA Division 1 National Championship. First round draft choice (10th overall) by Toronto FC of Major League Soccer in 2008, then was traded to the New England Revolution where he played 4 years. Also played professionally in Finland and San Antonio, retiring from professional soccer in 2014.

Steve Roy

1977 Enfield High School (EHS) graduate. First Enfield wrestler to become the CT State Wrestling Champion. As a senior wrestling at 185 lbs., placed first in: Class L, All-CCIL, Fitch, and CIAC Open championships. Awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler at the State Open. Under the tutelage of first-time coach and future Hall of Famer, Kirk Parker, finished his season with a 27-0 record, including 22 pins. Placed first All-CCIL, second in Class L in junior year. Compiled 43-2-2 record over his final two seasons as well as 260 points for the EHS team. Voted team captain, as well as co-MVP Wrestler. At 17, trained with the Springfield College wrestling team, and enrolled there after graduation with a full scholarship. Wrestled for legendary coach Doug Parker, the father of his high school coach, the late Kirk Parker. Starting wrestler as a freshman in the 195-pound weight class, and paired
with the future 1984 Heavyweight Division Olympic Gold Medalist (approximately 55 pounds heavier). Due to multiple knee surgeries, was forced to give up the sport prematurely. A true inspiration and wrestling legend in Enfield and at Springfield College.

Lisa (Scavotto) Capogna

1997 Enfield High School (EHS) graduate, while playing field hockey, basketball, and softball. Member of CCC East All-Conference Team for both field hockey and softball, All-State for field hockey, CCC East All-Academic Team, and Hartford Courant All-Academic Team. Member of 1993 & 1994 state championship field hockey teams, and 3-time conference champion teams (1993, 1994, 1996). Atlantic Region U16 Team for nationals, 1995 Junior Olympics, 1996 Futures U19 National Field Hockey Tournament, MVP of winning Cape Cod Classic Tournament team. Softball CCC East Championship teams in 1994 and 1996. Played Division I field hockey on an athletic scholarship at Quinnipiac University. 4-year starter (1997-2000), and awarded All-Conference Team, All-American Team, Academic All-American, NEC Scholar Athlete Award, and
honored for having highest GPA of all female athletes. Graduated in 2001, and earned a Masters in Physical Therapy in 2003 from Quinnipiac University. Part of the 1992, 1993, and 1994 EHS Field Hockey State Championship teams (1999 Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame team inductee). Elected to Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

Ed Mantenuto – George Daly, Jr. Award Winner

Head Coach of the first-ever, Fermi High School men’s hockey team in 1973, and led the team for five seasons. Was a 26-year-old teacher at Kosciuszko Junior High School during his coaching days, but left a legacy and foundation of a hockey program that became well known for years to come. Despite some initial setbacks, including the lack of a home rink in town, and players having to wear football jerseys for their earliest games, the program was a success right out of the gate.
The Falcons finished 11-9 in their inaugural 1973-74 season. Next season, the team was undefeated in the CCIL, capturing the school’s first championship in any sport. In five seasons, through 1977-78, his teams never had a losing record, and advanced to the state semifinals in 1978. The highlight of his career was a shocking 3-2 upset of perennial hockey power, Hamden, in the 1978 CIAC Division 1 quarterfinals. Following that season, he took his team internationally to play in a European tournament (Netherlands). That fall, he left Enfield to accept a Vice-Principal position in Holliston, MA. His teams and pioneering efforts to Fermi High School hockey are legendary, while the visionary leadership helped paved the way for many successful young athletes. A Gold Star father who lost his son Michael, a member of the US Army Special Forces, in May of 2017. He is also the proud father of daughters Katie Jo, Meggan and Lauren.
